Counseling Ministry

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Dr. Richard J. Rathbun is the director of the Woodland Pastoral Counseling Ministry. Dr. Rathbun received his BA from Baylor University, Waco, TX; his MDiv from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, TX; his MEd in Mental Health Counseling from West Texas A&M University, Canyon, TX; and his PhD in Pastoral Theology and Counseling from Brite Divinity School, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, TX. He is married and has one child. Dr. Rathbun is an ordained Baptist minister, endorsed by the Baptist General Convention of Texas. He has served as a pastoral counselor for over 18 years and is credentialed as a licensed professional counselor (Texas), a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (Texas), and a Fellow in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.

Dr. Rathbun takes a faith-based approach to helping people deal with a variety of problems. He respects the religious and spiritual traditions people bring to counseling and intentionally does not impose his personal beliefs on others. Dr. Rathbun believes that faith can serve as an essential source of help for people seeking answers to life’s dilemmas. He has been trained in newer models of psychodynamic, family systems, narrative and solution-focused models of psychotherapy. He has a special interest in integrating theology and spirituality with the psychotherapeutic process. He works with individuals, couples, families and children.
